Hot Spot #1- Northern Pea Island Page Header

Hot Spot #1 begins just south of Oregon Inlet and extends approximately 2.5 miles to the northern end of the freshwater ponds at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The erosion rate is estimated to be 12-14 feet per year (ft/yr). The major problem at this site is that dune erosion and lack of vegetation allow sand and water to collect on the road during storms. Winds also blow sand onto the roadway, which is a constant maintenance challenge. In some areas, only a few hundred feet of beach separate the road from the ocean.
